Our History
In the Fall of 2005 a dedicated group of church members led by Elizabeth Rahn compiled and published A History of First United Methodist Church, Brevard, North Carolina, 1873-2005. This history was based on and expanded on The History of the Brevard Methodist Church, 1879-1965, authored by Jennie Taylor Orr, 1879-1965.
The following items are extracted from the 2005 History:
1769 - John Wesley sent first preachers to America.
December 24, 1784 - Methodist Episcopal Church formed in Baltimore, Maryland.
1800 - Church of United Brethren in Christ formed.
1828-1830 - Methodist Protestant Church organized.
Prior to 1840 - Oak Grove Church organized.
1845 - Methodist Episcopal Church, South, organized.
July 17, 1873 - Deeding of site of North Gaston Street Church to Mr. B. C. Lankford and Trustees of Brevard Methodist Episcopal Church, South.
May 1, 1878 - Large one-room wood building on North Gaston Street site dedicated.
August 1904 - The wooden bilding was mosved back from the street and a new, enlarged brick structure, enclosing the old building, was brick veneered.
August 1939 - The Methodist Church formed by union of Methodist Episcopal Church North and South with Methodist Protestant Church.
1946 - Evangelical United Brethren Church formed by merger of United Brethren Church and Evangelical Church.
1953 - Brevard College Trustees generously offered three and on-half acre tract of land opposite College. Congregation voted and approved a resolution to accept the tract.
November 25, 1956 - Ground-breaking for new church.
December 29, 1957 - Last service held in North Gaston Street church.
January 5, 1958 - First worship service and Sunday School held in new Brevard Methodist Church on North Broad Street.
October 27, 1961 - Beulah McMinn Zachary organ dedicated.
April 23, 1968 - The United Methodist Church was formed by the unison of The Methodist Church and Evangelical United Brethren Church.
May 10, 1970 - New fellowship hall consecrated.
November 18, 1996 - Purchased current parsonage on Country Club Lane.
December 1998 - Stephen Ministry begins with thirteen church members commissioned in first class.
November 2001 - Broadcast of 11:00 a.m. Sunday worship service begins on WSQL Radio.
2002 - Sanctuary renovation with enlargement of choir area; Schantz pipe organ refurbished.
