Here at First United Methodist Church, we believe that our love for God is revealed in our love for and service to others. As such, we strive daily to live our mission statement: we are Christ’s people, drawn together in love, moving out to serve.
“Then the king will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who will receive good things from my Father. Inherit the kingdom that was prepared for you before the world began. I was hungry and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me. I was naked and you gave me clothes to wear. I was sick and you took care of me. I was in prison and you visited me. . . I assure you when you have done it for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you have done it for me.’”
First UMC is heavily invested in such local ministries as Sharing House, Bread of Life, The Haven, S.A.F.E., Habitat for Humanity, The Children’s Center, Rise and Shine, and the Boys and Girls Club of Transylvania County. We provide leadership, financial assistance, and countless hours of joyful volunteer service to these and other organizations in our area.
Great Day of Service
One Saturday each fall, First UMC (along with 5 other United Methodist congregations and the students of Brevard College) engages in an annual Great Day of Service. Teams of all ages
come together to provide landscaping assistance, chop wood, paint, complete home repairs, and more for families and organizations around Transylvania County.
Brevard High School
In the fall of 2014 we entered into a new partnership with Brevard High School. There we help in maintaining the building and grounds, provide goody bags for faculty and staff, and serve as tutors. We look forward to the growth of this new partnership in the months and years to come!
Inheritance of Hope
Each spring, First UMC serves as a sponsor for the local Inheritance of Hope Legacy Run. Inheritance of Hope, a ministry founded by Deric and Kristen Milligan, provides resources and support for young families facing the life-threatening illness of a parent. Hogar de Amor
For the past ten years, First UMC has served as a ministry partner with the Hogar de Amor orphanages in Colima, Mexico. In addition to providing financial assistance for this ministry, we send two mission teams to Colima each year to help with construction and maintenance, as well as fellowship with the children and staff. To date, over 100 of us have traveled to Colima to experience and contribute to this vibrant ministry!
Stop Hunger Now
Stop Hunger Now is an international hunger relief agency dedicated to providing high-nutrition, low-cost meals to those in need around the world. In January, 2014, the youth of First UMC organized a meal packaging event that drew over 100 of our members and packed over 10,000 meals. Our next event is scheduled for January, 2015.
The Pumpkin Patch
Long rows of dissimilar orange pumpkins, resting on a bed of green lawn, shaded by the red, yellow and green maple tree that stands in front of the Chapel, the Pumpkin Patch has become a tradition of Fall in Brevard. Opened in 2009, “The Patch” is a photo op like no other for parents and grandparents with young children and the perfect place to choose your fall pumpkins and gourds.
Funds raised from The Patch support the various missions of FUMC. In 2014, half of the proceeds went to support our two mission teams traveling to Mexico as a part of the church’s Orphans Ministry. The other half went to grow our recently established Mission Endowment Fund, which will help support the church’s mission programs for generations to come.
