What We Believe
Christ’s people … Drawn together in love … Moving out to serve
As followers of Jesus Christ, United Methodists share basic affirmations in common with all Christian communities. We believe in a God who created the heavens and the earth, and is still active in creating and sustaining the world. We believe that God is infinite in love, and that God’s love has come in its fullness in the person of Jesus Christ, who came to reconcile the world to God and to offer forgiveness of sins. This Jesus healed the sick, fed the hungry, and ate with sinners. We believe that in the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus the Church was born, and God has been active in the Church from that time to this through the power of the Holy Spirit to guide and comfort us.
We believe that as Christ’s church, we are an extension of Christ’s life and ministry in the world today. We are people devoted to love and service. We are called to share the story of God’s redemption with celebration and invitation. We are both witnesses to and participants in the new creation of peace and wholeness that God is bringing into our midst.
As United Methodists, we affirm the central importance of grace in our lives. Grace is the love and mercy given to us by God—not because we have earned it, but because the giving of such love and mercy is God’s very nature. Grace is a gift always available to us, from our first breath to our last. It stirs in us the desire to know God, empowers us to respond to God’s invitation to be in a relationship with God, and transforms us into the people God intends us to be.
As United Methodists, we also place special emphasis on Christian living, on putting our faith and love into action in the world around us. As the people of Brevard First United Methodist Church, this call to Christian living is evident in our mission statement. We are God’s people, drawn together in love, moving out to serve.
